It is not desirable to login as root from GUI in Fedora. But for installing some software one needs to login as a root from GUI. For login as root then follow the steps.

Login as a Normal user from GUI mode

Step 1: Open Terminal from Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal

Step 2: Now Login as a root from your terminal

$ su – root

password:-

Step 3: Now go to /etc/pam.d/ directory.

# cd /etc/pam.d/

Step 4: Then take a backup of gdm file

# cp gdm gdm.bkp

Step 5: Now Open gdm file in editor.

# vi gdm

Step 6: Find and Comment or remove this line into gdm file
auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

#auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Step 7: Save & Exit

These steps are enough to login as a root from GUI in Fedora10 but for Fedora 15 one more file is needed to edit to Login as a root.

Step 8: Take a backup of gdm-password file

Step 11: Save & Exit

Step 12: Reboot the system
